Brazil 11 - Torta de Mousse de Chocolate

Ok Ok, technically I'm in the Bahamas, but being the good foodie I am I have had no time to really update the ye olde food blog! I'm looking out at the most marvellous view of the most turquoise of turquoise waters, and a few palm trees thrown in for good measure - sitting in my swimming cozzie, enjoying the view and about to talk a bit more about Brazilian food. But don't worry, I've already sussed out the local delicacy and am heading off this arvo to try it out - already had a good recommendation!

Now back to the food....

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm....oh my....this one was put on my Twitter site, but this is a better pic! It's the Torta de Mousse de Chocolate that my aunty made me for my farewell lunch on Saturday. OH MY GOD. Not only does it have a superb crunchy and buttery base, it has the smoooooooooooooooothest chocolate mousse in the middle, but I have to say the thing that makes it stand out...is that crunchy toffee stuff on the top.

Oh myyyy...crocante...it's like burnt gold...dear me, so good, in fact I just kept scooping up the bits of mousse that had the burnt gold on top of it, scoop after scoop after scoop. Of course some partypoopers could say that it was a little over the top on the sugar front - I say that the toffee crunch offsets the ooziness of the mousse, and that's what you're always after isn't it, balance????

As for technique...well I watched my aunt make the toffee - just cooked sugar on the stovetop, she threw in some walnuts then poured it onto to the marble bench, let it set, then smashed it up!! See, it's even fun to make!

Just as a little aside - we had 13 people at this farewell lunch - my 3 host families - and for dessert we had the divine torta above, we had a bowl of Ambrosia (see previous post), and wonderful fruit salad with a bowl of Suspiro on the side - suspiro (meaning "breath" in Portuguese) is cooked and whipped egg whites and sugar - sort of like raw meringue...oh my...have a look at the next post!
